A patriotic house in my neighborhood.

Not exactly your typical 4th fare, but when Wegmans is still a novelty....

In Florida

I am staying in a Beach House in Fort Lauderdale.  The one disadvantage to this is the lack of internet service.  Staying in a hotel has an advantage here for this reason, but when traveling with children and other families, the house makes life easier.

I spending all my time in a Convention Center attending workshops and meetings.  When I am not so occupied, I RUN to the beach.  Thus, the blogging has suffered.  I apologize.

Businesses Need Love, Too

I spent the day back from the holiday touring a commercial space.  It struck as odd how often commercial spaces are neglected aesthetically.  In many ways, public spaces are even more important than residential ones when it comes to appearance.

The space a business maintains is its face.  Certainly the employees are important, and do represent the character of a institution, but a judgement is made instantaneously, as soon as a glance is made.  The judgment can be unconscious, but an unkempt office or shop whispers, “You are going to get poor service here.”

I suppose every culture understands this to some level.  Monuments and cathedrals are/were built strictly to testify to greatness.  Our modern day temple of consumerism, Starbucks, is about much more than coffee.

Washington Post House Calls

I designed a solarium for entertaining and relaxing.

A great end to a terrible day.  I had major plumbing issues today, but thankfully the drying out has begun.

I am just as pleased as could be to announce my design plan for the House Calls article is up and online.  It will be in print in tomorrow’s edition, but the web gives much more detail, plus a clickable link to my website!

Here it is.

I am going to be featured in the regular House Calls article that appears in the Thursday Home section of the Washington Post.

Every week a reader submits a room they are having problems decorating and/or using.  The Post asks a local decorator to solve whatever the issue is.  I spent a good portion of the day on my project, a long skinny solarium completely outside.

In a few weeks, when I am featured, I will add the link here.

A Clean Foundation

 My most favorite cleaning product.

OK.  I am going to admit that some people who know me think I am a little anal–is that polite blog talk?–about cleaning.  I swear I am not OCD *stops typing to wipe a smudge from the screen*.  I just like things neat.  So I can focus on the design…Really…

Seriously, I do believe a good scrubbing should be the first step in any design project.  Sometimes removing the clutter and repairing and cleaning a space can reveal what actually needs to be done.  I have clients who think I am going to suggest new furniture when sometimes all that is necessary is a good steam cleaning.

I take my own advice.  Today I ignored the little stack of papers on my desk and set aside a few hours to scrub down my balcony and its furniture. I realize most people won’t wash the railing rungs, but I now I can work outside without thinking about how much more I would enjoy it if it were pristine.

Well, maybe a little anal…

I am deluding myself in to believing the Home section of the Washington Post is reading my blog.

I mean, I DID just highlight the yellow set from Pottery Barn last week.  Well…it is a pretty color.  I even said so in the photo comment….

In my attempt to download the new version of WordPress I encountered a glitch.  I guess as a newbie this is to be expected.  I will add back in what I can.
